Recent reports suggest that there is growing scientific evidence that our brains work instinctively to categorise individuals based on visible and obvious criteria such as their age, skin colour, gender, sexual orientation, etc.  Our unconscious thoughts then assign good and bad characteristics to these individuals consequently affecting how we interact with them; creating our unconscious bias.
It follows, therefore, that if organisations fail to recognise, acknowledge and address what is inherent human nature, that there will be an adverse impact on how staff interact with each other, clients and customers. Unconscious bias will particularly effect the approach to equality and diversity which will in turn have repercussions for employee relations and morale and expose organisations to the risk of Employment Tribunal claims (under the Equality Act 2010 it is unlawful to subconsciously discriminate against another person).

It is not difficult to appreciate how important it is to tackle unconscious bias, provide staff with the ability to recognise their behaviour and equip them with the tools to help address this issue.

We have designed a training programme for your staff at all levels to do just this with a particular focus on the Equality Act 2010. By the end of the course your staff will:

  • Know and understand the principles of and duties set out in the Equality Act 2010 and the importance of equality and inclusion
  • Know and understand what it means to treat others equally and fairly and to recognise situations where problems can arise
  • Recognise that even with the best intentions, it is difficult not to make assumptions about others either consciously or subconsciously
  • Understand situations when they may make these assumptions
  • Understand what tools they can use to tackle behaviours

If you want any more information about this course or would like to discuss your training requirements, please do not hesitate to contact Caroline Shafar or Saira Ali at Law By Design Limited on 0161 437 0013 or at caroline.shafar@lawbydesign.co.uk or saira.ali@lawbydesign.co.uk
