Are you a GDPR Ostrich?

You can’t have failed to miss the persistent reminders that GDPR is coming in to force on 25^th May 2018. Unless of course you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months (we don’t blame you, the desperate e-mail attempts to maintain the marketing lists are persistent enough to drive anyone to a life off the radar). The good news is, it’s all going to stop tomorrow. Wayhay!

The Blue Chips and the Multinationals have got it covered. They’ve had GDPR specialists in for the best part of the last twelve months carefully orchestrating the perfect strategy to ensure compliance.

But what about the SMEs?

Despite the fact it might be easier and a whole lot more appealing to bury your head in the sand and pretend it’s not happening, it’s not advisable.

Did you know that under the new regulations, the ICO will expect organisations of all sizes (yes, including you, sole trader!) to be able to evidence compliance? Failure to do so could result in potential fines of up to 17 Million Euros (although the higher fines will be reserved for the more serious data breaches).

The good news, however, is that the Information Commissioner’s Office (The ICO for those in the know), do not expect immediate compliance but do expect organisations to be striving towards it. That means there is still time for you, the GDPR Ostrich, to make sure you’re fulfilling your legal obligations and to save yourself a whole load of avoidable trouble (because who needs that when you’re running a business?).
